Experience of dementia care burden: An exploratory study from India

Background In India, dementia care is typically provided by family caregivers. Traditionally caregiving undertaken women members, however, changing societal and structures may mean more men become involved in roles. This study explores gender differences experience of burden for older adults. Method A retrospective analysis was conducted to examine contextual factors contributing using case records individuals visiting a non-hospital based elder organization India. All had been administered Zarit Burden Interview – 22 (ZBI), Lawton Independent Activities Daily Living Scale (IADL) Katz Activity (ADL). Mixed methods used overall across genders towards subjective burden. Result Data examined from 60 caregivers adults (M = 22; F 38). Majority were carers reported feeling the recipient dependent on them which corroborated findings dependency IADL (44%) ADL (26%). Overall, experienced mild moderate ZBI scores did not differ significantly t (48) .70, p .48<0.05, they feel comfortable handing anyone else. Only 31% support paid attendants with families preferring manage themselves. Item revealed differed genders. Women (42%) strained quite frequently / nearly always compared (18%). Conclusion Findings indicate although similar levels burden, greater strain men. this has implications development sensitive caregiver modules.
